By the Numbers
Cowgirl Creamery award-winning cheeses are sold to over 700 stores, independent cheese shops, and restaurants, and can be found across the country at Whole Foods Market stores. In addition, the company distributes cheese for 16 of Sonoma and Marin’s best cheesemakers. Cowgirl Creamery and Tomales Bay Foods have grown steadily over the years at a rate of 10 percent per year. Cowgirl Creamery/Tomales Bay Foods were founded in Point Reyes Station in 1997. In 2003, the company moved the majority of its production and wholesale operations to Petaluma to be closer to transportation and housing options, yet still maintain its ties to the farms and dairies of western Sonoma and Marin counties.
“Petaluma is able to deliver big city amenities–like an educated workforce and a healthy professional services sector—along with excellent schools, natural beauty and an active agriculture-based economy,” says Sue Conley, Petaluma resident and co-founder of the company. “We especially appreciate the urban growth boundaries that prevent suburban sprawl and encourage dense development in the city core. Keeping the surrounding agricultural and open space intact is key to the good life in Petaluma.”
